About the team
You will be responsible for the growth and technical underwriting requirements for the AIG New Zealand Speciality, Casualty portfolio whilst managing a team of highly experienced and technical underwriters. You will report to the Head of Casualty, ANZ and CEO of AIG New Zealand.

About the role
Responsible for driving underwriting excellence and profitable growth for the Casualty profit centre in New Zealand. Key areas of responsibilities include:
  • Development of compelling got-to-market strategies
  • Cultivation and development of key business relationships
  • Underwriting appetite maintenance & development
  • Underwriting discipline & adherence to guidelines
  • Mentoring & development of underwriting staff
  • Monitoring and reporting of key underwriting metrics
  • Adherence to, and reporting of, revenue production & budgets

What you need to know
Key accountabilities will include but not limited to:
  • Manage day to day activities of the Underwriting teams for Casualty, including oversight of daily workflow, underwriting processes, communications, and stakeholder management.
  • Responsible for the quality of the underwriting practice and risk selection processes for Speciality Casualty.
  • Apply framework of Underwriting Authority and manage the delegation of authority to underwriters.
  • Lead, mentor, and train Underwriters to enhance team’s performance.
  • Together with the Head of Casualty ANZ be involved in the review of the profit studies and take the lead for executing underwriting strategies required.
  • Work with the Head of Casualty ANZ, Head of CBE NZ and CEO NZ to develop, deliver and execute the Casualty Specialty business plans
  • Work with the Head of CBE NZ to align sales and relationship management initiatives with AIG NZ’s key strategic Brokers
  • Ensuring compliance with local regulations, corporate/regional/legal entity reinsurance strategies, guidelines, and risk appetites and managing exceptions.

What we’re looking for:
  • Proven track record in underwriting, claims, distribution or analytics and sound understanding of the Casualty segment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Casualty product lines, including General & Products Liability, Environmental Liability and Contaminated Products insurance
  • Strong industry sector experience for Construction, Energy, and Manufactured Products
  • Proven experience growing a Casualty portfolio profitably
  • Sound understanding of NZ Casualty market environment, through market dynamics & behaviour, portfolio management via segmentation, and technical risk profile / pricing.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with experience and capability to lead in a dynamic and changing business.
  • Well regarded profile within the NZ insurance market, with a reputation for demonstrating leadership through honesty and integrity.
  • High capacity for data, analytics, quantitative, and qualitative indicators in portfolio management
  • Strong customer service ethic, with sound understanding of the business processes
  • Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues in other parts of the company
  • Strong execution and results orientation
